For many decades Susan Chan Egan, who has jokingly described herself as an "amateur Sinologist," has moved within the literary and academic circles of American Sinology, making the acquaintance of many of the most prominent China scholars of the 20th century. Following up on her book A Latterday Confucian: Reminiscences of William Hung 1893-1980 (Harvard University Press, 1988), whose Chinese version was selected as one of the "Best Books of 2013" by the CCTV network, she has recently published a Chinese work entitled Reflections at the Margins of Sinology 寫在漢學邊上, a lively collection of stories and memories of some of the greatest Sinologists of the previous century, including Hu Shi, Y.R. Chao, William Hung, Patrick Hanan, James Hightower, Paul Serruys, and many others.

Please join us at the East Asia Library for a conversation with Susan Chan Egan and Prof. Ronald Egan of the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, who will share some of their own personal reminiscences of these prominent Sinologists and stories about their experiences in the field of American Sinology, as well as their thoughts about the evolution of China studies in the West. The conversation will be moderated by Yang Jidong, Head of the East Asia Library
