About the talk:

In this talk the speaker goes through some basic ideas of her recent book The Art of Cloning and analyzes why and how we should theorize China’s Cultural Revolution from a cultural perspective. She will also try to explore the meanings (or meaninglessness) of the Cultural Revolution to contemporary China, and confront the weaknesses of the Left in dealing with contemporary problems.

About the speaker:

PANG Laikwan teaches at The Chinese University of Hong Kong as the Professor in Cultural Studies. She is the author of a few books, including The Distorting Mirror: Visual Modernity in China (University of Hawaii Press, 2007), Creativity and Its Discontents: China’s Creative Industries and Intellectual Property Right Offenses (Duke University Press, 2012), as well as The Art of Cloning: Cultural Production during China’s Cultural Revolution (Verso, 2017).
