We would like to invite you to join us for the fourth 2020-21 year meeting of the East Asian Studies Workshop, sponsored by the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures. This event will be the first of the EALC Alumni Panel Series, consisting of Panel #1: Alternative Academic Careers (Feb 5th) and Panel #2: Academic Careers (Feb 26th), organized with a view to strengthening the ties within the EALC community and informing current students about the possible career paths in- and outside academia. We encourage all current graduate students to attend and learn about the different experiences of our alumni!

We will have the pleasure to welcome four panelists (in alphabetical order of last names):

Dr. Kathleen Geisse

Dr. Kathleen Geisse graduated from Stanford EALC with a Ph.D. in Japanese in 2003. She is currently a Japanese medical translator living in San Francisco.

Dr. Shaun Jahshan

Dr. Shaun Kelley Jahshan (Ph.D., Stanford EALL 1996) has been teaching at the Harker Upper School since 2005.  In her first year there, she developed and taught the Ethics curriculum, a course in comparative moral philosophy with readings in Confucianism, Daoism and Buddhism, as well as Western traditions. In subsequent years, she developed Harker’s Mandarin program, beginning with Mandarin 1 in 2006 and adding courses to build the full Middle and Upper School program Harker offers today.  Her students range from first-time learners to highly proficient native speakers in need of literacy support.  As a full-time teacher of Chinese, Dr. Jahshan enjoys helping her students develop language proficiency and a range of learning skills not limited to language acquisition, which run the gamut from memory skills to information literacy.  Dr. Jahshan particularly enjoys highlighting the cultural and historical aspects of the Chinese language, encouraging students to cut through assumptions and prejudices.

Robin Colomb Sugiura

“As Associate Director of Programs, Robin Sugiura develops and manages OPA's professional and personal development training for all postdocs. Robin also advises postdocs on integrating the many opportunities available across Stanford and beyond into their postdoctoral training plans, focusing on their career goals and interests. Robin received her BA in Japanese from UC Berkeley, two MAs in Japanese Literature from Waseda University in Tokyo and Stanford, and left Stanford ABD to commence her career in professional development curriculum development. Robin's hobbies include cooking (and eating), yoga, hiking, karaoke, watching track & field and baseball, and her newest obsession is her adorable infant son.” (Stanford OPA)

Dr. Chong Kee Tan

Dr. Chong Kee Tan graduated from Stanford EALC with a Ph.D. in Chinese in 1998. “He is currently a farmer and homesteader at Labishire Farm. He is in the process of starting an eco-village/homestead commons focused on stewarding the land, becoming self-sufficient, and creating a post-capitalist culture that is more in harmony with human and mother nature. He enjoyed his time at EALC very much because of the tremendous flexibility which allowed him to qualify not just within the department but to do so in the Economics, Political Science, and Comparative Literature departments as well.”

Stanford graduate students who actively participate in the workshop will receive a $10 amazon gift card.
