The following page includes a sample timeline for master's students in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures completing the EALC M.A. degree requirements in 2 years.
M.A. students may choose to enroll in 8-18 units, depending on tuition rate. Students should meet with the SSO to establish a feasible timeline to complete degree requirements.
2-Year Timeline Progression for M.A. Students
Year 0 (Summer before Year 1)
Summer
Stanford Language Center modern language placement exams
Stanford Language Center English placement test for new international graduate students
Classical Chinese placement exam for new graduate students in Chinese studies (at the end of the EALC Department New Graduate Student Orientation information session on Thursday, September 17)
Year 1
Autumn
8-10 or 11-18 units
EALC 201: Proseminar in East Asian Humanities I: Skills and Methods
Modern and/or Classical East Asian and/or Other Language Course(s) (for Classical Chinese, Beginning CHINA 205 or Advanced CHINA 208/209 depending on result of placement exam after orientation)
Advisor-Approved, Field-Applicable Course(s), and/or Elective Course(s)
Complete modern/classical language placement tests before the start of the quarter
Meet with Director of Graduate Studies and/or Prospective/Official Faculty Advisor at least once.
Winter
8-10 or 11-18 units
- Literature students: EALC 202: Proseminar in East Asian Humanities II: Current Scholarship
- Chinese Linguistics students: CHINA 290: Research in Chinese Linguistics
- Japanese Linguistics students: JAPAN 279: Research in Japanese Linguistics

Begin submitting applications for summer language study, field-specific academic programs, and/or external fellowships and funding
Meet with Director of Graduate Studies and/or Prospective/Official Faculty Advisor at least once.

EALC 203: Proseminar in East Asian Humanities III: Theories and Paradigms, if applicable

Complete required steps for graduate annual progress review:
- Meeting with DGS and/or advisor
- Updating student file with C.V. and requirements fulfillment in My Academic Path (MAP)
Complete the MA Program Proposal with thesis advisor signature. Submit Program Proposal to SSO.
Meet with Director of Graduate Studies and/or Prospective/Official Faculty Advisor at least once
Year 2
Autumn
8-10 or 11-18 units, or TGR or graduation quarter
Modern and/or Classical East Asian and/or Other Language Course(s)

Prepare to submit the Graduation Quarter and/or TGR e-Form and Application to Graduate in Axess
Begin writing M.A. thesis
Meet with SSO to go over degree progress to ensure that the 45-unit minimum requirement and program requirements are met by graduation.
Winter
8-10 or 11-18 units, or TGR or graduation quarter

Begin to submit the Graduation Quarter and/or TGR e-Form and Application to Graduate in Axess.
Apply for Spring Graduation Quarter if all non-thesis requirements are completed to avail of reduced tuition rate.
Begin submitting and/or completing first M.A. thesis draft to/for faculty advisor and/or other reviewing faculty
Notify Department staff on plans to attend/not attend commencement.
Spring

Submit first draft of M.A. thesis to faculty advisor by week 5, and final draft by University quarterly thesis submission deadline
