Stanford Language Center English placement test for new international graduate students
Classical Chinese placement exam for new graduate students in Chinese studies (at the end of the EALC Department New Graduate Student Orientation information session on Thursday, September 17)
Year 1
Autumn
11-18 units
Fellowship stipend equal to or greater than the total amount of a Course/Research Assistantship at the 20-hour/50% rate
EALC 201: Proseminar in East Asian Humanities I: Skills and Methods
Modern and/or Classical East Asian and/or Other Language Course(s) (for Classical Chinese, Beginning CHINA 205 or Advanced CHINA 208/209 depending on result of placement exam after orientation)
Advisor-Approved, Field-Applicable Course(s), and/or Elective Course(s)
Complete modern/classical language placement tests before the start of the quarter

* Students are encouraged to present papers at local and regional workshops and conferences. Communicate your interest to present at the EAH and EAL Workshops early on to the grad coordinators.
Prepare for/take qualifying exams. Modern Chinese Lit students take 2nd exam.
Winter

Begin preparations for submission and defense of the dissertation prospectus by autumn or winter quarter of Year 4, no later than autumn quarter of Year 5.
